In reading, the emphasis moves from learning to read to reading to learn. To accomplish this, students work on identifying the main idea of a story. Story details and story events in sequence need to be understood. Students learn various strategies to help them understand reading content.
Students begin to use a variety of reference materials to help in research projects. In addition to reading, students use language, grammar skills, and writing skills to express ideas and explain events. Listening, viewing, and speaking continue to be developed in the fourth grade. Students also begin to learn the use of technology and digital media strategically and capably.
