Fluency is defined by the dictionary as:
Ability to express oneself readily and effortlessly
The term is usually used in a language context, but I like how it was used at the 21st Century Fluency Project:
The 21st Century Fluencies are not about technical prowess, they are critical thinking skills, and they are essential to living in this multimedia world. We call them fluencies for a reason. To be literate means to have knowledge or competence. To be fluent is something a little more, it is to demonstrate mastery and to do so unconsciously and smoothly. Hours: 9:15 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.
The mission of the media program is to insure that students and staff are lifelong learners who can access, evaluate, and use information in both print and non-print forms as well as engage in reading for discovery and personal enjoyment. The media center strives to serve as a literary, multi-media, and technological learning commons for students, staff, and community of IPS.
At Inverness Primary we are attempting to expand our notions of contemporary literacy, what it means to be a reader, a processor of information, and communicator in a time when information is increasingly networked, digital, global, and abundant.
In the Read/Write Web classroom it's all about the transfer of information; of collabortive, individualized learning; and active participation of all members of the class. It is marked by the continious process of creating and sharing content with a wide audience. These tecnologies are demanding that we reexamine the way we think about content and curriculum, and they are nurturing new, important shifts in how best to teach students.
We are investigating our favorite authors and illustrators. Everyone should have one. You know, the kind of author that tickels your fancy or spins your imagination to dizzying heights. Click the Author Study link to view some author web sites. The list, of course, is by no means complete and is only meant as a sample. If you have another favorite author, or illustrator, not on the list, please give a link to their web page and tell us a little bit about why they are a favorite. The more we share the better we all learn. Author Study
Wordle is a tool for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence, or importance, to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or post them on your Wiki page.
In Media, we will be using Wordle to help improve our writing. Wordle can help us find the words we use, well, maybe a little too much. By 'seeing' what words we use too often, or too much, helps us choose different, or more exciting words. Knowing about words will help our writing. Check out our 'Wordle' page to see some of our first efforts, middle attempts, and finished pieces. Enjoy!
