Teacher FAQ

1. I want to make a desktop shortcut to my network, or 'Home', folder. I did it once, but it has been so long that I have forgotten.

Anywhere on the desktop right-click the mouse; choose "New" and "Shortcut". In the dialogue box type \\ipm211\your user name followed by the $ sign. ( ie. \\ipm211\einsteina$ ) Click "Next" and type the name you wish to appear under the icon. Click "Finish" and your done. The $ sign is a system command that tells the computer to show an otherwise hidden folder. Remember to use the 'back slash' (leans to the left) and not a forward slash.

2. How do I make a shortcut to the student network folders on the student computers for easy access? How do I make one on my computer so I can check the student folders?

Create the shortcut the same as creating a shortcut for yourself (question 1), except substitute ips-student$ instead of your username. Again, remember to use the back slash.

3. Where are the server grade level "common" folders, and how do I know if I have permissions for the other folders?

Click "Start", and choose "Run". In the dialoge box type: \\ipm211 and click OK. You will see all the folders that are available. Everyone has permissions to all the common folders. Some folders, for various reasons, are restricted to certain users. It may sound overly simple but if a folder opens then you have permission, if it doesn't, then you don't. Almost all the files, in any folder, are "read only", meaning that if you want to use, or edit, them you must save them to your computer.
